I don’t remember which came first, the dream of the circlesquare (below) or this work-a-day epiphany:

  • The derelict dairy barn was attached to the derelict house. That didn’t matter since the barn had superior studio “potential.” In the kitchen there was a peninsula coming out from the wall. Deciding to attach a circular kitchen table, the circular plywood substrate I was cutting would require a right-angled addition in order to attach it to the side of the rectangular peninsula. Soon, the curious shape, a circlesquare, began finding its way into the studio.

the quatrefoil

A hybrid of opposites, circle and square, curve and straight, it has a narrative and formal presence I’ve sought to bring into my work for some time. I have cut out and collaged quatrefoils into paintings only to move on to something else.
